Artist Statement
Creativity is a learned skill—it’s about taking risks and breaking habits. When I taught elementary school art, creativity wasn’t an issue. Kids’ imaginations run wild, unbound by rules or norms. But by college, many students are shackled by stereotypes, mimicry, and fear of failure. Problem-solving, brainstorming, and thinking outside the box are skills they have to relearn.
As a maker—an object maker—the act of creation and the physical process are everything to me. That’s what I want my students to experience and, ideally, achieve.
